About the program

After screening initial applications, a cohort of up to 5 public high school students from the city of New Haven, CT, will be able to participate in and contribute to the Yale Daily News’s NHPHIP. Interns will attend reporter training and education sessions twice a month, on topics ranging from how to source a story, how to frame stories, and other themes that would aid them in personal investigative journalism. These trainings will be taught by YDN staff, and interns will be tasked with helping generate ideas on how to improve story sourcing, idea generation, and even help source and interview for certain articles. In addition to getting experience at a publication, interns will also receive advice from our staff to help them develop the skills to become freelance journalists and excel in other forms of journalism and media that they may pursue. There will be a variety of networking opportunities available for interns to write for professional New Haven-based newspapers as well. Interns will be able to see the Yale Daily News building in action during publication and even get opportunities to explore various multimedia components of journalism. This program is designed for interns without access to adequate educational resources and opportunities to pursue journalism, and hopes to alleviate barriers to the industry through this immersion for passionate students.
