Aeris, Panhellenic sororities host simultaneous recruitment, Panhellenic see increased popularity and bids

After Pi Beta Phi members voted unofficially to disaffiliate last semester, former members of the sorority unanimously revoked their status as active members, making Yale’s Panhellenic recruitment only include three sororities. Despite this, the Panhellenic sororities gave out more bids than in 2023 and the News was not able to obtain Aeris’ numbers.

Administration to extend full room and board coverage for all future FroCos

In June, the Yale College Dean’s Office announced a one-time FroCo pay increase to cover the full cost of room and board for the current class of counselors, while committing to review its pre-existing FroCo pay scheme.

Administration preps for creation of new space for Middle Eastern and North African students

After University President Peter Salovey promised the creation of a MENA space in December, administrators told the News that MENA students will have dedicated spaces, peer liaisons and an assistant director hired by the fall semester.

Right-wing Israeli politician Simcha Rothman visits Shabtai, ignites protest 

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, the Jewish society Shabtai hosted Simcha Rothman, a controversial Israeli politician who is a member of Israel’s far-right religious zionist party and chair of the constitution, law and justice committee within the Knesset, Israel’s legislature. The event — which was not publicly advertised — was protested by Israeli Yale community members and New Haven residents.

Slifka Center celebrates Tu BiShvat on campus

Wednesday evening the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale held a seder meal to celebrate the holiday Tu Bishvat.

Yale under investigation for ‘response to complaints of alleged discrimination,’ details unclear 

The United States Department of Education opened a Title VI Shared Ancestry investigation into Yale and four other schools, per the most recent listing of cases by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. Yale officials did not clarify the details surrounding what they called the “one specific event” prompting the investigation.

At noon on Tuesday, hundreds of students gathered on Cross Campus for a walkout titled “There is No Back To School in Gaza.” Students listed demands of the University, including publicly supporting a ceasefire and boosting support for Palestinian studies and scholars.

Yale admits 9.02 percent of early applicants, marking lowest early admit rate in more than two decades

Of 7,856 early action applicants, Yale College admitted 709 students to the class of 2028 — the lowest early acceptance rate in the history of Yale’s current non-binding early action program.
